John 'Lacklands' (1199-1216), 'Short Cross' Penny, 1205, Class Vb1, Chichester, Rauf, crowned bust facing, pellets in curls 2/2, rev. + RAVF · ON · CICE · voided short cross, cross pommées in angles, 1.12g [17.28grns], 6h (Chichester, dies 11/r7; SCBI [Mass] 1473 same dies; North 970; S.1351), lightly crimped and with general softness of strike to high points, otherwise light golden toning, fine to almost very fine in parts, a scarce provincial mint. Provenance, From the Cabinet of a Distinguished Lady in Kent, , Seaby, by private treaty (ref. S01879), 6 February 1975 , , Chichester was re-opened briefly during the Shortcross Period (1180-1247), to assist in the Renovations of 1205, for which it is known to have struck coins classified under 5a2-5c (c. 1204/5-1210). Just four moneyers were employed at the premises, of which Rauf (or Raulf) was instrumental in opening the mint alongside Pieres and Simon, before the last was replaced by Willelm.
